3rd Quarter Submission

We scrapped a lot of what we made before and came up with what was originally supposed to be a more simplistic idea but ended up being still confusing. That being said we nailed the aesthetics we were going for. We were able to create and eerie and dark mood which is exactly what we were going for.

Revision 2

As we wrapped up our shooting for our film, we completely remade a shot list and within two days reshot everything that was needed. Previously we had the idea of filming on a local bus but ended up scrapping that. We again started over and this time we focused on tight dark shots that help to set the mood while alluding to a story as it went along.

Digital Distribution - Cloverfield Paradox

Cloverfield Paradox is an interesting development in the film industry. The previous Cloverfield movies were released to film first after months of advertising and such. However, The Cloverfield Paradox did something different and instead of advertising for months they aired a commercial during the superbowl and then after the superbowl the movie was available on Netflix. It skipped the traditional movie model of putting the movie directly in theaters and then later releasing it digitally and just immediately released it digitally. It was a bold move and brought a lot of attention to the movie. While the movie got mixed reviews but overall I do appreciate this tactic and I hope to see more movies do similar things in the future.

Digital Distribution - Blade Runner 2049

Blade runner 2049 is a movie released in October 2017. However leading up to it's release they released three digital short films to give more context to the movie. Those three short films being Blade Runner Black Out 2022, 2048: Nowhere to Run, 2036: Nexus Dawn. These were released a little while before the film came out to build hype. Later the actual film was released by first Sony Pictures first, and then second by Warner brothers. Additionally there was a special distribution from Alcon Entertainment and Oculus VR where they distributed the movie in virtual reality. When it was released at home it was first initially released on services like STAR and HBO. It was released on all other services like iTunes and such later. It was recently released on DVD starting January 16, and then distributed through Netflix and Redbox on January 23, 2018.

Digital Distribution research

A typical film utilizes a distribution model in which the movie is released in theaters first. In this time especially within the first three weeks the movie will make 90-95% its money. Depending on how well the movie does it will stay in the theaters longer but a movie will typically stay in theaters 3-6 weeks. After the initial release in the movie theaters a month or two after that there will normally be some type of digital release. Sometimes the movies will make deals with companies like iTunes or Amazon to get the digital release on their platform first. Then a month or two after that the movie will come out on DVD. Alongside with that if you couldn't already rent the movie digitally they would give that option to rent the movie digitally. Similarly to the digital release big companies like Target sometimes will also pay to have movie released in just their store for some amount of time.
